Best Photos of the Year 2016

The time has come when everyone looks back over the past lap around the sun, while simultaneously gazing optimistically toward the promises held in the new year. I always enjoy the opportunity presented in a stroll down memory lane, perusing the archives of the many photographs created over the 12 months previous, which inevitably dredges up every single one of the feels humanly imaginable. The tremendous joy, heartfelt tears and sidesplitting laughter held in each of the photographs captured and preserved over the past 365 days is truly something immense and powerful to face.

Queen Amidala of Naboo Royal Gown

By day, I'm a mild-mannered photographer and totally unassuming member of society.  Upon the fall of night, however, I reveal my true nature: I'm a tremendous nerd. The title crawl of Star Wars changed my life, I've had lengthy arguments discussions about who shot first (the answer, of course, is Han) and I knew from a young age that I wanted to be a Jedi and live on Endor, in a tree house. Then I grew up a bit, realized that the Force isn't real, and the old growth hardwood forests of Northern California were the closest I could ever get to my forest moon dream house.

Getting Ready Behind the Scenes for Denver's Annual Red Ball

There are few better feelings in the world than giving back to the community by helping a worthwhile cause succeed.  It doesn't have to be a grand gesture or something way above and beyond; something as simple as volunteering your time and talents can make a tremendous difference.

Best of 2014 - Holladay Photography

I am so grateful to so many people who have made this year such an amazing one. More than likely if you are reading this you are one of the reasons I am who I am as a photographer and a person. It has been another year of learning, trying, failing, and learning more. These are just a few of the frames that visualize my learning and the baby steps I am taking to a my new style and vision.Enjoy!

My first time to vegas in over 20 years. I am always looking to improve myself and my photography. WPPI was amazing. I love putting my hands on new products and feeling their quality. I super obsessed with the tactile feeling of prints and products! The experience itself was amazing..just not enough time to do everything! Las Vegas has changed so much. Staying on the strip was kind of like being on an alien world. We saw the sites, walked the expo at WPPI 2015 and drank the drinks. We saw the amazing stage production of Cirque de Soliel -KA.  I had a Sazerac that was amazing!

Beauty with Brains is amazing. The level of charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent at these events is amazing. We get together every month to photograph fashion and beauty portraits and I feel like the level of work keeps going up and up! Check out a few selections from the March photoshoot held at Metro Nightclub in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

In April Randall and I made the trip to St. Louis to participate in the always amazing and forever different image experience Shutterfest 2015! It is a shot in the arm for wedding photographers and wedding photography in general. All kinds of hands on learning and photoshoots to learn from. I am all about continuing my photography education and perfecting my craft.

Butterfly Pavillion Westminster Colorado

When an opportunity comes up to try something new with something you have photographed a few dozen grab it with both hands and dive in! The Butterfly Pavilion in Westminster, Colorado seemed like a great opportunity to make use of macro lenses for close-up shots of these gorgeous fluttering things.   What set this apart from other macro-shoots was the ability to use tripods and speedlights.
